In the very beginning of the book Black Beauty has one master who is very nice and doesn't treat him cruelly. He is a colt and was still in a meadow with his mother. Black Beauty's master was very fond of him and called him Darkie. His first home was where he was broken in and it goes into a lot of detail about it. After his breaking in he went to go live with another kind family that he also liked. This place was Squire Gordon's, and he lived there a few years. During that time Black Beauty was named and started to pull a carriage for a man named John Manly. Squire Gordon was the one who named Black Beauty.
In the middle of the book, Black Beauty and Ginger are both traded off to a man named York. Then when a man named Ruben Smith is riding Black Beauty he gets hurt. Ruben then falls off Black Beauty and dies. By the time they find Ruben he is dead, and everyone thinks that Black Beauty has bucked him off. Black Beauty is then traded off to a man named Filcher. He is good to Black Beauty, but the first groom that takes care him steals his oats. And the second one is to lazy to properly clean out the stalls, and he then ends up at a horse fair.
At the end of the book Black Beauty has some good owners, and some bad owners. While waiting for his owner outside of an event, another horse is tied beside him. it is Ginger, and she looks terrible. She is with an owner who treats her awful, and she wishes she would just die. A few hours later, Black Beauty sees a cart with a dead horse on it that looks like Ginger. Black Beauty then gets traded to a nice corn dealer, but the dark stables almost cause Black Beauty to go blind. After that, Black Beauty goes into hardship when he is traded off to a bad cab driver. Then, at a horse fair, Black Beauty is sold to a farmer in the country. Black Beauty is then sold to Blomefield where one of the kids from is his first family is still working. That is Black Beauty's lat home and he then lives the rest of his life happy.
